Kratom leaf powder brings a restrained botanical range of tones to the studio. Depending on the material, delivery, paper and application, the impression is mainly between sage, olive, khaki and warm earth tones. It is offered exclusively in dry form for creative and craft experiments and is not a ready-to-use paint.
Vivid red, clear blue, pure yellow or white do not arise from kratom leaf powder. Those who need such accents should supplement the base tone with separately identified earth, mineral or artist pigments. This keeps clear which material contributes which part of the visible result.
Examine the base tone first

Product names and material codes help with clear identification, for example Green Borneo SGMD, Red Borneo RB, White Sumatra WD or Gold Borneo GOMD. Product names are not a promise of colour, origin or quality, and do not designate a standardised pigment colour.
Before mixing, an unchanged reference on the intended paper is advisable. For a simple study, the leaf powder can be moistened with a little water and worked into a paste. Water disperses the particles, but does not fully dissolve them or permanently bind them after drying. There is no universally applicable mixing ratio; add water drop by drop and note every change.
Clearly label additional pigments
Ochre, umber or identified iron oxide pigments can contribute muted yellow, red and brown tones. Correspondingly labelled artist pigments are required for blue, white or black. Before use, always check the manufacturer's information on suitability, processing, safety and compatible media. Handle loose powders with as little dust as possible and do not transfer them to food containers.
A clear comparison chart contains three areas:
- Kratom leaf powder on its own,
- additional pigment on its own,
- several clearly labelled combinations.
Create all fields on the same paper and, wherever possible, with the same tool. Note product name, material code, additional pigment, type of application and date. Do not work from a blanket recipe; instead, change small quantities gradually and begin a new field for each variation.
Distinguish between water and medium
A water-only sample shows tone, grain and distribution, but not a permanently bound paint layer. If adhesion is to be part of the experiment, a suitable artist medium may be used separately according to the manufacturer's instructions. Always test on an offcut before undertaking larger work. Binders and artist media are not included in our Studio Sets.
Artist pigments are available, for example, from specialist art and conservation suppliers. Any specialist retailers mentioned serve only as editorial guidance; the information for the specific product remains decisive.
An honest studio palette distinguishes its components: kratom provides sage, olive, khaki and earth tones, while additional pigments provide the desired colour accents. The material journal makes this combination traceable.
